#MMCM Meet My Character Monday #Blog #Hop - Meet HIM from HIM, a #Suspense/Thriller Coming Soon
Good morning folks. Welcome back to the Meet My Character Monday Blog Hop. If you have a character you want to introduce or to read about more amazing characters, visit the Meet My Character Monday website.
A quick announcement, HIM has a release date of February 28th, 2014. I’m so excited, so today I want to introduce you to the villain of HIM.
I did not give Amy’s abuser a name or describe him physically. I didn’t name him for many reasons. One is because Amy is constantly telling people, “Don’t say that man’s name, please. I can’t bear to hear his name.” In the following excerpt, we hear her explanation for this:
“I can take care of myself. And this he you are referring to, he’s your uncle…”
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t say his name. I refuse to ever say his name. I don’t want to hear his name either. I just can’t. Just call him, he. That’s what I do.”
“Why can’t we use his name?”
“Because he makes me say it too much when he…” I broke off unable to continue.
In another scene where Amy is investigating him, trying to gather evidence against him, we find out that his other victims refuse to say his name as well, and we see how hearing and saying his name affects his victims:
I gave her a long moment to try to put the names together, but when she didn’t, I said his name and how I was related to him. The second the words came out of my mouth, I knew. She looked just as sick at hearing them as I was at saying them. His name was something I absolutely refused to say aloud. When I did, a bit of stomach acid or chunks of food usually came up. My insides started to shake as if I’d had too much caffeine or sugar. My stomach tightened, cramped, and then I felt as if I was going to have diarrhea.
I purposely didn’t give him a physical description so that the reader could picture for themselves what this man looked like, sounded like, etc. I also did this because Amy refuses to see him as a person. I personally picture him as a man in his mid-forties, six-feetish with dark hair and eyes.
He has been married once and has two children: Eve and Michael. He had two steady girlfriends, but the second one, features most prominent in the novel. She has two children: Kyle and Katie. Amy suspects that he has raped Katie and had a hand in Kyle’s death, but just how much of hand, he hopes no one ever finds out.
The man has two distinct personalities throughout the novel: the smooth talking brother, which we see in the following scene:
“Thanks, sis. You’re so good to me.” He hugged her tight in a way that said he loved her and couldn’t imagine not having her in his life. She hugged him back just as tightly. The sight of him acting so normal made me want to scream in frustration. With him acting like brother of the year, I would never be able to convince anyone of who he really was.
And the abuser, which we see in this scene:
He lunged for me and pulled me out of my chair by my ponytail. I yelped in pain, and instinctively reached up to try and pull his hand away. When I did, his other hand grabbed me by the throat and squeezed. “Listen little girl, you do as I say without the lip, do you hear me?”
Fortunately, for all the other characters in the novel, he doesn’t survive. Coming upon the body on the deck one character describes the scene this way:
I let my eyes take in the scene: the bloody boardwalk, the dirty, sandy, naked man lying face up on the warming wood. Thankfully, someone had covered his middle so that he wasn’t completely exposed. My stomach heaved at the sight of his open eyes, staring straight toward the heavens.
But the question is, who killed him and why now?

What I've Read This Week 1-25-15
Two things to know before I start my review. One, I received this novel free in an exchange for an honest review. Two, the version of the novel I received is an audio version.
I absolutely loved this book. I found myself laughing aloud so much so that I even embarrassed myself and a Wal-Mart employee while grocery shopping today. Just as I got to a particularly hilarious part, I burst out laughing in the middle of Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, my laughed was timed perfectly with a Wal-Mart employee picking up a box of candy bars in which the bottom burst open, spilling the bars all over the floor. The poor guy thought I was laughing at him. I'm not one of those people, I promise. :)
In Savvy Stories, Dan tells stories about life as a middle-aged man raising his first child, and a girl no less. We go through the parent's struggle in conceiving, carrying, and having a child, then follow the father through all the ups and downs of raising said child.
The stories are funny, informational, heart-wrenching, and relatable, even for someone like me who doesn't have any children. My husband and I are nearing forty...wow, that was hard to write. Anyway, we don't plan to have children, but if we did, I could see this as our life. The uniqueness of this story is that this couple isn't in their twenties. They are raising their first child in a point in their life when most of their siblings and friends are preparing for grandchildren.
So why the four stars and not five. Well, and I don't know if this was the narrator or the author, but there were a few times where words were pronounced correctly or were flipped while reading. I felt that certain things and information were repetitious like photos from his past. I think a few times he tells us that his mother a photobug. Some of this repetitions probably has to do to the fact that, I'm sure, this was a diary he kept and due to the fact that, like me, Dan can get a bit long winded. (We can't help it, we are story tellers. We love to talk.) I also got a little lost in the timeline. For example, in the beginning of the novel he tells the story of going to Publix with a daughter old enough to throw a fit right after telling the story of going to Home Depot with what seems like an infant daughter. This would confuse me for a bit. Lastly, some of the shorter pieces felt like filler. They were quick with no real depth to them. Now theses last two might have a different effect on me if I were reading the story and not listing to it.
I will definitely be adding more Savvy Stories to my to-read list and recommending this novel to my friends with young children or friends thinking of having children, although considering my oldest nephew is eighteen, most of my friends have preteen and teenage children. I don't think I'll be seeing very many babies in my future until the nieces and nephews have them. Although, as Dan and his wife have shown, I shouldn't rule anything out. :)
14 is an awesome book. I didn't see this coming. Great character and story development.
In 14 a group of tenants investigate the odd apartment building in which they live. They will never guess what is behind padlock doors, doors that don't lead anywhere, and the dead man in the wall.
I'm not going to say anything else because this is one of those novels you have to read for yourself. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15062217-14
Random Lucidity was a wonderfully emotional read, with a twist that I didn't see coming, making the this the second novel I finished this week that took me by surprise. As a writer that is saying something, because I can usually figure out where a story is going.
This novel is about a man who suddenly decides to changes careers. He doesn't necessarily switch to the one he wants, as he doesn't feel confident enough to do it, but he puts himself into the field and on the path toward his dream. In doing so, his life takes some drastic twists and turns.
I related to Reggie is so many ways. He and I think a like, worry and obsess over things the same way, and our luck runs the same; we eventually get want we desire, but we suffer a great deal along the way. Whereas, I'm disappointed by certain aspects of the story, and at times felt the novel had too much real life and not enough fantasy, that is life. Things don't always work out the way we plan, and even though I didn't like those parts and felt they slowed the story a tiny bit, end the end, I was relieved to read a novel that doesn't give its characters a perfect, easy life, not even at the end.
I will say this, as much as I loved this story, I really want to read "Johnson Rambling: A Novel". Those sections of the novel were intense, shocking, and had me in a vice grip, but I'm slightly demented.
This is definitely a must read for aspiring authors, or well anyone at a crossroads in their life. Dave shows that even thought taking that leap of faith can be scary, it makes many things in your life uncertain, and you may lose people along the way, you also gain people, eventually find your footing, and move toward a happier future.
I'm not enjoying Dark Skye as much as i thought I would. The sex scenes are great, Nix is her amazing self, but the angst between the two MCs is tiring, although, I think this has to do more with my temperament a the moment than Kresley Cole's story telling.
I started No Rest today. I'm enjoying it a little more than I did Dark Skye. I did end up enjoying the ending for Dark Skye. Don't think I've read enough of this series to keep track of the mythology.

WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY Blog Hop 1-21-15 Excerpt from Resistant Sci/Fi Romance
Welcome back to WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY. I hope everyone is staying warm this winter. We’ve had some cold days, but things are starting to warm up a bit.
If you are new to this hop or just deciding that joining this hop would be a great idea, visit the WIP IT IP WEDNESDAY blog home page at: http://wipitupwednesday.blogspot.co.uk/ to read the sign up instructions. Also on that page, you will find links to other wonderful authors and their WIPS.
This is my eighth week on this blog hop. This week's piece comes from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. I’m talking to a photographer right now about photo options for this cover, so stay tuned for that an the synopsis. I hate writing those, so I’ll probably wait until the last moment to write it, as usual, but it will come. So on to the excerpt. I’m moving ahead a little more. In this scene, Charles, Sahara’s best friend and the big brother she never had tries to convince her that Daniel does have a thing for her.
---
A little after night fall, we drove back to the hill where I had first seen the horde and waited for them to pass. Daniel argued with us both about staying out. He said we needed back up, said people were waiting for their stuff, said we wouldn’t be worth anything because we had been out all day.
Charles laughed at his excuses after I disconnected the line following Daniel’s fourth excuse. He turned to me and said, “You are going to give that man a heart attack,” getting as comfortable as he could behind the wheel of the Humvee.
“What do you mean?” I asked, turning to look at him in confusion.
“Oh come on. You know as well as I, if I had been out here with anyone else, he would have whole heartedly agreed to this plan.”
“Well, the sooner he learns that I’m not his kid sister and he isn’t responsible for me, the better.”
“Again, you aren’t that stupid. We both know he doesn’t see you as a kid sister.”
“I don’t know of another reason as to why he would be so protective.”
“Don’t you?”
“Nope. I know everyone thinks he is in love with me, but I know what I saw between him and Maggie. No one who honestly has feeling for one person could do that with another person.”
“Are you absolutely positive you saw what you said you saw?”
“Yes. Why?”
“Because I asked him about that night, and he told me nothing happened between him and Maggie.”
“You asked him. Shit, Charles, what are we in high school. Did you tell him I saw him? How did a conversation like that come up, for Christ’s sake?”
“Calm down. I didn’t go all teenage girl on him. I simple asked him. I told him someone saw the two of them talking and she was naked, which isn’t beyond the realm of possibility with the way we live. People know how she is, and you weren’t the only one up that night. He said nothing happened between them. She did greet him naked, but he said he turned his back on her and turned her invitation down, then he finished his rounds and went to bed. A completely different story than what you made it out to be.”
“That isn’t all that happened, but whatever. I’m not discussing it. You may not think he sees me as a sister, and maybe he doesn’t, but he sure as hell doesn’t see me as lover.”
Seeing the sincerity on my face he asked, “You don’t see the way he touches you, looks at you, behaves around you do you?”
“I do, and it all adds up to me being his sister. He has never kissed me, grabbed my ass, or expressed any sexual feelings toward me in any way.”
“Sex does not equal love. Daniel isn’t the kind of guy who would do any of those things to any woman. He is the type of guy to treat the woman he loves exactly the way he is treating you. Granted, he is drawing things out. He really should move things to the next level soon.”
“There is no next level.”
---
I hoped you enjoyed that. Just a little update on HIM, a novel that some of you are following, I’ve finished my read-through, the novel is off to my beta-readers. Two my betas have already written 5 star reviews on the novel. You can read these reviews and add the novel to your Goodreads to-read list at: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24377181-him. HIM is not a romance, but a suspense thriller, but if any of you would like me to add you to my list of beta-readers, email me at: jennifer.powell.reynolds@gmail.com. Meet My Character Monday Blog Hop - 1-19-15 - Meet Abby from SHIFTER
Good Monday morning everyone. Welcome back to the Meet My Character Monday Blog Hop. Today I would like to re-introduce you to the female main character in my supernatural romance, Shifter, Abigail Lynn Sinclair, Abby for short. Abby is nearly thirty years old, and was born and raised in modern day Alabama.
Abby is a recluse. She lives alone, works from home, and even shops online, something her younger sister insists, “is so not natural”. Abby is a loving person who lives for her sister, Carrie, and Carrie’s children. In the following excerpt, we see Abby’s love for her family through Dimitri’s eyes:
After the kids eat, I crawl up next to Abby on the mattress to wake her. She doesn’t open her eyes, just snuggles up into my arms and nuzzles my chest. “My parents are going to be here in an hour to take Carrie and the kids to the cabin. You want to wake up and see them off?”
“No.” She groans and laughs.
“Maddox, I think it’s time for Aunt Abby to wake up, don’t you,” Carrie says, setting the youngest of her three children down in the hallway. The look he gives his aunt tells me exactly what he is about to do. I quickly jerk out of her arms and off the mattress as the child comes barreling across the room. Abby turns in time for him to leap from the floor onto her.
With a humph, she jerks upward, wraps the kid in her arms, and begins tickling him. Wanting to join in on the fun, the other two run from the kitchen and dog pile on their aunt.
“In my house, Maddox is the first one awake,” Carrie tells me. “If he wants you up, you get up. He usually achieves this by throwing himself on top of you, successfully landing on your bladder.”
“He most definitely found mine,” Abby says as she pins one of the boys and begins blowing into his stomach making a noise kin to a person blowing a raspberry and causing the kid to laugh hysterically.
I can’t take my eyes off her. Her hair is everywhere. She looks tired. Still she gives the children every bit of attention they demand, doing her best to play with each one, showing no favoritism. The pain in my heart that knows I can’t give her this causes me to look away.
Carrie is standing on the other side of the mattress giving me a knowing look. The look isn’t happy in its knowing. Her look is sad. Sad for her sister, whom she believes is going to be hurt in the end.
“All right. Aunt Abby is done. Come on, get up. Go get dressed. I have to pee and shower,” Abby announces.
The kids grumble but do as she asks. Carrie follows them to Abby’s room.
When this novel begins, Abby is coming off a horrific relationship. Her ex was physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive. He would starve her when he thought she was too fat and shovel food down her throat if he thought she was too skinny. He beat her and burned her, and photographed all of this to further demean her. Only through shear dumb luck was she able to escape the relationship with her life and all the evidence of her abuse. Despite being out of the relationship, the abuse she suffered permanently damaged her. In the following scene between Abby and Devan, we see how little she thinks of herself.
“I’m plenty aware of how people react to me. I promise.” I look down at the ground suddenly feeling the need to not make eye contact with him.
“Let’s test your theory. Go out with me this afternoon. Take me on a tour of your town, and I’ll show you how much attention you get.”
My head jerks up painfully. I search his face to see if he is being serious. He looks serious, but he can’t possibly be serious.
“Going out with you would be the only reason I would get any attention,” I say, countering his point and ignoring the fact that he might have just asked me on a date.
“You don’t give yourself that much credit, do you?” His eyes grow a little sad.
“I know better. I’m not a stupid person.”
“You aren’t as smart as you think you are,” he says a little flirtatiously.
“Oh, I’m definitely as smart as I think I am.” Shit, am I flirting back? This isn’t good.
“All right, I agree. You are as smart as you are beautiful.”
His words are teasing, and I know I’m taking them the wrong way, but I can’t help it. “And the insults just keep on coming.”
“Damn it, woman, I can’t win for losing with you. Fine, don’t go out with me. I still say you should get out more often.”
Feeling as if the world will see her the way her ex-boyfriend did, she hides in her home with her work and her cats. Over time, she lets herself go and becomes overweight, which only further perpetuates her feelings of self-loathing. Her sister and the few friends she has try to get her out of the house, to date, to join the world, but it isn’t until she adopts a cat who acts more human than he does feline, has a run in with a crazy woman, and meets a gorgeous man who tells her she is beautiful, that she finally breaks out of her shell.
Feeling that she isn’t skinny enough or pretty enough for the new man in her life, she decides that she has to make some big changes in her life. She wants to learn to love herself, excerpt herself for who she is, and to love again. On this road of self-discovery she, Abby learns to love herself and find the love of her life. In this following excerpt, Abby tells the man she loves that she loves him for the first time.
The tears come back. He has told me repeatedly that he loves me, but I have never said it back. I do, of course, love him. I have almost from the first moment I saw him. Since I have told myself enough times that I didn’t believe in love at first sight, I didn’t believe in how I felt.
The pain in his voice as he says this makes me hate myself. I let myself cry even harder, pulling him tight into my arms. I kiss his lips, his chin, and his throat. All the time letting my tears flow and ease. I kiss the spot right below his ear then nibble his lobe, and whisper quietly in his ear, “I’m in love with you, Dimitri. I love you with every piece of my soul, and I will love you for all of eternity.”

#8Sunday and Snippet Sunday 1-17-15 Blog Hop Post from SHIFTER, PA/RO
Thank you, everyone, for stopping by my sixteenth Weekend Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday and my eighth Snippet Sunday post. If you want to read more excerpts from a great deal of authors or to join in the fun, stop by both blogs and peruse their sight.
Today’s excerpt comes from chapter sixteen of my supernatural romance, Shifter. In this scene, we see Devan and Dimitri’s reaction to someone flirting with Abby.
“Nah, I bet their fathers would love to see you running down the street.” He looks to my breasts, the tops of which the sports bra and tank top I’m wearing have pushed up, and they are nearly spilling over.
I know most men are breast men, but I didn’t realize that so many would be willing to look pass the roundness of the rest of my body. Before I can respond, Dimitri leaps from the back of the sofa and bounds toward me. Devan comes back into my line of sight a second later, looking a bit angry.
His expression pisses me off. How dare he get jealous. He could have had me, if he had wanted me.
Want to know what read more about how these two react to someone new flirting with the woman they desire even though they don’t know the other has feelings for her, download your copy of Shifter today at Amazon, Smashwords, or Barnes and Noble. What I've Read this Week - 1-16-15
Divided isn't any better than Dualed. This series is interesting enough to pass the time if you are bored, but other than that, this isn't something I'll be seeking out in the future.
I started The Testing Sunday, 1-11-15. I'm only liking it slightly more than I liked Dualed. This will be a three star read for me unless something unpredictable happens. This your typical Hunger Games want-a-be novel.
This series is turning out to be little more interesting than I originally thought, so I'll continue to the end, but I only recommend it if you are bored.
I finished Indigo last night, Thursday, 1-15-15. I enjoyed this novella. I thought it was beautifully written. As with all short pieces, i wish it had been longer. I think a few sections were rushed, and I would like to have had more story, more background on the couple and Ray, who oddly enough was my favorite character.
Well, that is it for this week. Stop by next weekend to see what I've been reading. Enjoy your weekend.

WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY 1-14-15 - Excerpt from Resistant, a Sci/Fi Romance
Welcome back to WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY. I hope everyone is staying warm this winter. We’ve has some cold days, but no snow. “If it is going to be below freezing it should be snowing,” my mother said this morning when we went for our morning walk. I agree.
If you are new to this or just deciding that joining this hop would be a great idea, visit the WIP IT IP WEDNESDAY blog home page at: http://wipitupwednesday.blogspot.co.uk/ to read the sign up instructions. Also on that page, you will find links to other wonderful authors and their WIPS.
This is my seventh week on this blog hop. This week piece comes from my current romance WIP, Resistant. I know everyone loved the steaminess of my last post, but this one is tame and a great deal shorter. This scene is pivotal though, as you see Sahara growing bolder in her actions even if she doesn’t quiet trust her feeling for Daniel.
---
We pulled up directly in front of the house a half an hour later. The sight of all of our vehicles would be a terrifying sight to those inside, but I hoped that when the group only saw four women (one from each truck) and Desmond they wouldn’t attack. After much debate and me dealing with Daniel’s outrage over my plan, we decided to go in without face covers and some of our weapons. If our people had been doing their jobs correctly, the short walk from the trucks to the door should be uneventful, but Daniel was determined that all our exposed skin was covered. I tried to explain to him that if we did that they wouldn’t immediately see us as women, and would go on the defensive.
He finally relented, but he wasn’t happy about it. His look of fear, desperation, and anger had me wanting to pull him to me and kiss him until he calmed down. I even caught myself moving close to him and reaching out to touch his forearm, but I stopped myself before I did anything more. Daniel didn’t move as he watched me, but Charles gave me a knowing look, and I ignored him. I mentally slapped myself for what I nearly did, and moved away before Daniel could say anything more.

I hoped you enjoyed this exceprt. Just a little update on HIM, a novel that some of you are following, I’m making my way through one last read-through before sending it off to my beta readers. I’ve also made a slight adjustment to the cover to make my name stand out more. HIM is not a romance, but a suspense thriller, but if any of you would like me to add you to my list of beta readers, email me at: jennifer.powell.reynolds@gmail.com. To read the first two chapters of HIM, visit: https://www.goodreads.com/story/show/375385-him?chapter=0
