Today I’ll be sharing excerpts from my upcoming novella, Saying Goodbye. Right now, this novella is still hung up in editing. I may wait until January to release it, as I’ve heard that new releases in November and December don’t do well. My editor has been a bit busy, so she hasn’t had a chance to work on the novella as much as she would like. I don’t have a synopsis for the novel yet (because I’m lazy), but in a nutshell this novel is a paranormal love story/love triangle about a ghost who is trying to find a way to stay on earth to be with the love of his life. In doing so, he introduces her to a man that she might start having feelings for. I’m going to stay with Saying Goodbye for a few more weeks, but then I’ll be switching gears again moving on to Outcast, a paranormal romance that I’m hoping will go on sale early next year.
The following snippet comes right after the last snippet I posted. They are at the party and bantering with one of Michael’s friends.

An hour later, the party was in full bloom. Michael had had about three beers more than Erica would have liked, but he wasn’t plastered, just really happy.
Erica on the other hand was annoyed. After his fourth beer, one of his friends came over and suggested they do something stupid—with the music pounding so loud in her ear, she didn’t hear what the guy had said, but he was drunk so it had to be stupid—and the two boys were off, leaving her alone with a bunch of people she didn’t know.
Because she put so much effort into her job, Erica hadn’t made that many friends at school, and the ones she had made either weren’t there yet or weren’t coming. She wandered around the party for a while, looking for Michael and a familiar face. Drunk people kept trying to put drinks in her hand, to pull her onto the dance floor, or just bump into her.
Erica was by no means a prude. She had done all of that, had been one of those people not long before, but over the previous few months, she’d grown up. She’d done too many stupid things while plastered and listened to too many of her friends talk about the dumb stuff they’d done to want to continue down that road.
She was tired of being embarrassed. Michael said that doing stupid things was the point of getting drunk. Maybe it was, but she had begun to feel as if it was all a little pointless. After a certain point, being drunk stopped being fun and started hurting. By the end of those nights, Erica had a headache, she was vomiting, and she was bruised from stumbling into things and people.
Not only that but she was tired of guys trying to get her to do things while she was drunk. Michael wouldn’t have been friends with half of his frat brothers if he knew how many of them had hit on her at one of their parties.
Erica didn’t see herself as one of those girls that all of the guys wanted. She saw herself as being pretty average looking with average height, average weight, plain features, light-amber, medium length hair. She didn’t see herself as being anything special. People’s inhibitions were just low while drunk, she knew, and they were indifferent as to who they were with as long as they were with someone.
At any given party, at least two of Michael’s friends asked her to sneak away with them. Yeah, sometimes they were joking, but more often than not, she was sure that if she had said say yes, they would have followed through. She was fortunate none of them had tried to force themselves on her.
Erica knew that she should have probably told Michael, but none of them hit on her while sober, and she didn’t think they ever would. If one of them had done that, she would have known they really wanted her, and then she would have told him. There was no need in messing up their friendship over nothing.
Because of all of that, and because of her new job, one that she was beginning to truly enjoy and wanted to excel in, she decided to stop drinking like that. Michael thought she was being too serious and told her to enjoy being young while she could. In a year, he told her, he would be running a restaurant and wouldn’t have much time to do that kind of partying, so he wanted to enjoy the life while he could, and he wanted her to do the same. She understood what he was saying, but drinking had lost its appeal for her.

Thank you, everyone, for stopping by my Snippet Sunday & Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday blog hop post. Sorry for being a bit sporadic these last few weeks, but I’ve had a great deal stuff going on. I’m probably going to continue to be sporadic until the new year. When I am here, though, I’ll be posting from my new release, Resistant, a sci-fi/horror romance. Resistant is romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. Once Saying Goodbye gets back from editing, I’ll go back to sharing from that novella.
In this excerpt, Sahara, the main character, is alone and unwilling to leave her house due to the zombies roaming her neighborhood. To occupy her time, she spends her days picking them off from her front porch.
I fired the rifle five more times. These zombies were easier to kill because they were closer, but then that gave me another problem. I now had four rotting bodies right outside of my fence. They would most definitely bring more. Cursing myself for being stupid, I scanned the street for more zombies and seeing more than a few come out of dark corners, I packed up my toys and went inside.
My fence buzzed on and off most of the day. The electricity didn’t kill them, but like the animals they seemed to be, they understood that it hurt and they should stay away from it. Eventually, as the day started to close, I noticed that it had been a while since I heard the fence. I peeked out one of my upstairs windows and saw that most of the zombies had moved on. They had carried off the majority of the four zombies I had killed.

I was absolutely surprised by this book! I knew it had some enigmatic mystery and some dark action, but the author set up the story so well I was happily amazed. It starts with a very engaging character, a young woman who is very well portrayed in a community, Oasis, Florida. The town's mysteries are maze-like and become deeper and more sinister as the book progresses. This is a very original approach to the concept of vampires and their existence.

Susanne Leist, "I've been reading murder mysteries and thrillers since I was a teenager. I've read all types of mysteries, from Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes. In recent years, I've begun to read paranormal mysteries. These books bring fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery. It's hard to find books in this genre. That is why I decided to write a paranormal, murder mystery of my own. It is the type of book that I search for and love to read.
My book, The Dead Game, has dead bodies and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. However, it also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. And don't forget the haunted house--we must have one of these.

Jennifer Lynn Powell Reynolds is a native of North Alabama. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree from National University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Alabama.
Writing has always been a large part of her life. She has worked on a number of different projects throughout her life, but her focus had mainly been on her education. Now that that part of her life is over, she is focusing on her writing career and loving every moment of it.
Aside from spending her days immersed in the fictional worlds she creates, she loves to scrapbook and create stained glass pieces.

I’m sorry for being MIA these last few weeks. I’ve had a lot going on. One week I wasn’t able to access the link, so I missed that week. When I couldn't log in, I rescheduled my post for the next week. Unfortunately, I didn’t remember to add the link to the blog page when it became available, causing me to miss the next week. After that, I’ve been swamped. Resistant came out on the 26th. We had an amazing release party. Lots of zombie themed fun. Last week, the husband and I went to see the Foo Fighters. You need to see them in concert. This past weekend, I was at the Rocket City Lit Fest in Huntsville, AL. I had a great weekend. Anyway, enough about all of that. On to today’s post.
Today I’ll be sharing excerpts from my upcoming novella, Saying Goodbye. Right now, this novella is hung up in editing. I may wait until January to release it, as I’ve heard that new releases in November and December don’t do well. My editor has been a bit busy, so she hasn’t had a chance to work on the novella as much as she would like. I don’t have a synopsis for the novel yet (because I’m lazy), but in a nutshell this novel is a paranormal love story/love triangle about a ghost who is trying to find a way to stay on earth to be with the love of his life. In doing so, he introduces her to a man that she might start having feelings for.
The following snippet comes right after the last snippet I posted. They are at the party and bantering with one of Michael’s friends.
When sober, Michael was more of a leader than a follower, but when drunk, he thought every one of his friend’s ignorant ideas was the greatest thing ever. My that point, they hadn’t done anything to kill anyone or land one of them in jail, but they’d had a few injuries and gotten stuck in some awkward situations.
“I do not.”
Erica opened her mouth to remind him of one the dumbass things he had done, but Kevin returned with a six-pack of beer under one arm and a plate piled high with pizza in the other hand.
“No sodas,” he lied, pulling a can from the pack he had sat on the coffee table in front of them and plopping down onto the sofa.
“You’re so full of shit,” Erica said, grabbing a beer. Although, as she thought about it, she realized that he might not be. Leave it to a group of barely legal boys to buy a bunch of beer and not at all think about getting anything else to drink. If all else fails, she would drink water from the tap, she decided.
“Bite me,” Kevin said, then really looked at their costumes. “Nice,” he said, eyeing her from head to toe. The word came out in one long, drawn out suggestive sound. Turning to Michael, he said, “Your idea?”
Michael nodded, and Erica rolled her eyes.
“Role playing. I like it. You going to let him hook you later?” Kevin asked her.
“Get bent,” she said and glared at her boyfriend as if his friend’s words were his fault. In a way, they were because he didn’t hit him or try to shut him up in any way.
Michael merely winked at Kevin, then the two high-fived each other.
“He definitely isn’t now,” she said. The words were low and more to herself, but Michael heard her.
“Awe, baby, I’m sorry,” he said, putting an arm around her and kissing her forehead.
“The kiss changes nothing,” she said, smiling to herself.
