Today I’ll be continuing to share an excerpt from my new release, Saying Goodbye.
This scene takes place about a two weeks after Michael’s death, and we see that Erica might have a surprise coming her way.
---
That Saturday, the first thing Erica did when she got home from work was go for the boxes, which her father had shoved into the downstairs closet. Neither parent said a word. Erica didn’t open the boxes right away. She ordered a pizza, snatched a few beers from the fridge—her dad scowled, but promised not to tell her mother—and a pint of cookie dough ice cream out of the deep freeze, then locked herself in her room.
A few times her mother knocked on the door to check on her, but Erica promised her that she was all right, and she heard her dad tell her mom to leave her be.
Erica cried like a baby as she flipped through photos. Later, she stripped down naked and put on one of her favorite shirts of his so that all she could smell was him. She stuffed her face, got a little tipsy, and mixed those random items of his she kept in with her own stuff.
When she finally got everything put away but that box of condoms it was late. She held the box, wondering what she should do with it. She didn’t plan to have sex ever again—couldn’t imagine herself letting anyone be that close to her. That act was too personal, too soul touching to do with just anyone, and she couldn’t believe she would ever find another person whom she could love so deeply.
Erica remembered the day they had first gotten condoms. Natalie, a friend of hers from high school had gone to the health department to get on birth control. As she was leaving, the nurse at the desk gave her a bag of condoms. She in turn gave them to Erica. Natalie hadn’t gone on the pill because she was having sex. Her periods were bad, and she had heard that getting on the pill would help. Natalie’s mother was one of those people who would have automatically assumed she was sleeping around if she asked her mother to take her to the doctor, so she went to the health department.
Michael and Erica had just started having sex, so they jumped at the chance to get free condoms, and since Erica really needed to be on the pill, they made themselves an appointment. They had been embarrassed to ask for condoms at their first visit to the same health department, but the lady at the desk had given them some as they were checking out.
The memory sobered her. Erica looked into the box to see that it was two-thirds full. Over the last year or so, they hadn’t been as careful as they had been in high school. Children were something they were no longer afraid of having. No, they hadn’t wanted them so soon. They had wanted them after Michael was running his own restaurant and they were married, but they weren’t as actively trying to prevent them, as they should have been.
She clutched the box to her chest and fell back into her pillows, thinking, What if? Had they used protection that last time they had had sex? Had they done anything else? She was no longer on the pill. She’d forgotten to get her prescription renewed and had missed her last yearly checkup. Between classes and working, she had let it slip her mind.
Could I be pregnant? she thought. Could I be lucky enough to have one last thing from him? Something that would mean more to me than the world.

That’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed it.

Today I’ll be continuing to share an excerpt from my new release, Saying Goodbye.
This scene takes place about a week after Michael’s death, and we see that Erica is learning the hard fact that everyone grieves differently.
---
That Wednesday, her mom had to drag her out of bed. Erica had spent most of the week wrapped in Michael’s favorite blanket of hers, wearing one of his t-shirts, and a pair of his socks. Her hair was matted, she smelled a bit of body sweat, and her head hurt from all of the crying she’d done.
Rachel had worried that Erica would stay in bed forever and that she and her husband would have to commit her, but Sam had told his wife that he had made Erica promise that when the weekend rolled around she would make herself get up, shower, and get ready to start her new life. This didn’t dissuade Rachel’s fears, but she let Erica sleep until eight that Wednesday morning, and no later.
Erica cried and begged not to go, but her mother told her that she had made a promise to Caroline that she would help, and she insured Erica that this, too, was part of the grieving process. Both of Erica’s parents said that she couldn’t heal, couldn’t learn to go on without him while letting her grief get the best of her, so she had agreed to go on the condition that she didn’t have to get dressed.
When Caroline saw the way Erica looked, she sobbed quietly, and Rachel glared at her daughter. Erica felt guilty for looking so haggard and giving the woman more of a reminder of what she lost than she already had—as if going through his things wasn’t bad enough. On the other hand, Erica thought Caroline looked too nice, too controlled. She looked almost as if nothing had ever happened. This ticked Erica off a bit. She wanted to curse the woman, shout at her, and accuse her of not loving her son.
That night when they got home, she told her mom so, and Rachel chided Erica for thinking that way and told her that everyone grieves differently, and just because Caroline didn’t grieve the way Erica thought she should didn’t mean the woman wasn’t grieving. Erica didn’t necessarily agree with that at the time, but she kept her thoughts and feelings to herself.
Michael’s apartment was sparse, considering that he spent most of his time in school or at work. Caroline took his books, his trophies, his clothes. Erica took his photo album, which mostly had pictures of her or them in it, a few of her favorite t-shirts, a few DVDs, and the box of condoms he had tucked in the bottom drawer of his nightstand. That last item she snatched and shoved into a box quickly before either mother saw. They knew the two were having sex. They weren’t that naive, but Erica thought it best not to throw it in their face.
Erica piled a few other odds and ends of Michael’s into the back of her mother’s car. Once they had John’s truck loaded down with what was in the rest of the apartment, John, Carl, and James took the stuff back to Michael’s parents’ house where they planned to keep the items stowed away in the attic. Caroline, Erica’s mother, Emmy, who had come with James toward the end while they were loading the truck, and Erica went to work cleaning.
Caroline made sure that every crease, crevice, and corner was clean. By the time they left, no one would have ever known that a college frat boy had lived in the apartment. She hated that even more. He was gone and now every little thing that proved that he had been here was vanishing as well.
After looking over the room one last time and feeling the emptiness settle on her like lead, Emmy took Erica’s hand and pulled her from the apartment and the building. Erica cried all the way home, holding Emmy’s hand.

That’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed it.

Book Description:
As the new alpha of his gargoyle clan, Lachlan takes on a leadership role at the historic peace talks between the wolf shifters and tree witches. Cooperation is crucial to their survival. The magical veil over the Isle of Stone is weakening. But unity is hard to achieve when tensions are running high. So is Lachlan’s concentration when a sexy wolf shifter rushes to the talks. Her wild beauty is mesmerizing.
Raina has her hands full with pack problems, from pack mates succumbing to blood lust to animosity toward her species. The source of her problems is clear-the gargoyles. If they hadn’t lured the humans to the island with their unconventional rock concerts, she wouldn’t have to deal with the fallout. She wants nothing to do with them, especially their alpha. His not-so-surreptitious glances are hard to miss. Nope. Not the kind of attention she needs. She’s heard rumors of the rebellious, attention-seeking rockers–and of their endless string of females.
But when humans come to investigate the wolf attacks, Lachlan and Raina must work together to coerce them off the island. And time spent together sparks a forbidden attraction. If unexpected love were their only problem, they’d be able to deal with it. It’s not. Time is running out, for them and their island.
Excerpt
He inhaled to clear his harried mind, taking in the fragrance of wildflowers and heather as he gazed over the rolling slopes of the moors. The land exuded a sense of tranquility and hope under the soft light of the morning sun. The peace between the Isle of Stone’s natives, however, had lasted only minutes before the cacophony began with ceaseless bickering. Agreeing to work together might have been a mistake.
Not that he had much of an alternative.
When Matilda stopped to take a breath during her speech, Lachlan seized the moment to interrupt her. “We all know of the injustices done to each of us, which led to the division of the island. Time to move beyond the past and address the current situation.”
“Part of what led to the schism is poor communication,” Ian added. “By meeting together to discuss the future of the island, we can avoid making the same mistakes our predecessors did.”
“Predecessors!” Matilda said. “It was only twenty-five years ago. I was there and remember it well.”
“My apologies,” Ian said, bending forward. “With your experience, you’ll be valuable in ensuring we don’t make those same errors in judgment.”
Lachlan had been a young gargoyle during the battles, but he remembered fragments with vivid recall. Battles with magic and bloodshed. Countless deaths. A senseless tragedy.
The sound of movement through the tall grasses made him turn. A female ran toward them, dark hair blowing behind her like the mane of a wild filly. Her red dress blazed like a siren, but he didn’t notice the pattern until she’d slowed her pace—similar to the one on Ian’s kilt.
“What the—” Bryce said at his side, adopting a defensive stance.
“It’s all right,” Ian said. “She’s my daughter.”
Lachlan didn’t recognize her, but that wasn’t a surprise. The wolves had kept to their territory on the isle for over two decades. Around what he’d guess her age to be as he scanned her nubile body with soft, supple curves.
A wolf shifter. With storm blue eyes like the ocean at dusk.
And the daughter of the alpha wolf.
Damn.
“Sorry, I’m late,” she said through quickened breaths, drawing his attention to her parted lips.
She dropped her hands to her knees as she panted from the run, and her hair fell forward in tempting disarray. Her movement offered him a glimpse of her cleavage, breasts rising and falling with each deep breath.
“I was held up by—” She glanced at her father before adding, “pack matters.”
“You haven’t missed much,” Ian replied before addressing the crowd. “This is Raina. Second-in-command in our pack.” He then introduced the others to his daughter.
Lachlan widened his stance and narrowed his eyes at Ian. “You introduced your beta last night.” That wolf shifter’s pride had bordered on arrogance; nothing like his alpha, Ian.
“Aye,” Ian acknowledged. “Seth and Raina share duties.”
The tree witches exchanged glances. Claire, the younger of the two, whispered, “Inconsistency.”
Raina assessed him through inquisitive eyes, making Lachlan forget what he was about to say.
Straightening to his full height, he forged ahead. “We all need to be in human form when they come.”

#SnippetSunday & #8Sunday Excerpt from Saying Goodbye
Happy New Year, everyone. Thank you for stopping by my post on the Snippet Sunday & Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday blog hop. I’m sorry for missing last week, but I was busy with Saying Goodbye’s release party. I actually nearly forgot about today’s post as I spent most of my Saturday with my nieces.
Today I will resuming my posts from my newly released novella, Saying Goodbye, a paranormal love story. This novella went on sale Saturday, January 9, 2016 and is only $1.99.
The following snippet comes from the first chapter. If you remember from the last snippet, Michael and Erica were discussing her Halloween costume.
“It isn’t that,” he said, stepping up to her and wrapping her in his arms. “Seeing you that way has made me all tingly in my nether region. I really want to have my way with you before we go.”
“Oh no, you are so not getting me out of this getup until the end of the night. Besides, you’re the one who insisted that we go to this party, so we’re going to this thing. Get off me,” she said, half-heartedly pushing him off her with a laugh to stop him from going any further was his kisses, which were already trailing down her neck and making her head fuzzy.
“Okay, okay, let’s go. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can leave,” he said, throwing his hands up and backing away a bit, though the leering expression on his face told her what he wanted to do.
That’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed it.
Thank you for stopping by. If you want to read more excerpts from other authors or if you want to join in the fun, stop by both blogs and peruse their sights.

Today I’ll be continuing to share an excerpt from my novella, Saying Goodbye. This novel is now on sale for $1.99.
The following snippet comes right after the last snippet I posted. In this scene, Erica is trying to get through Michael’s burial.
---
An hour or so later—when she felt as if she had calmed down enough to move—he made her stand. Bugs covered the plate of food he had brought her, so they dumped the food, rinsed the plate in the creek, and walked down to the house.
Most of Michael’s extended family was gone by the time they got back. Her mother took one look at her and nearly burst into tears. Pushing her toward the bathroom to wash her face, her father took her mother in his arms and pulled her into another room, whispering in her ear something Erica couldn’t hear.
Erica managed to cool down the redness and lighten the puffiness around her eyes enough to be presentable before seeing his parents. She found them in the kitchen. Her father’s words, that she had to eat or she would have to see Dr. Haddock, were stuck in her head, so she had gone in there in search of food.
The second she entered the large kitchen, Caroline shoved a plate into her hands and told her to eat. Erica did as the woman ordered, noticing that she wasn’t eating. When John noticed Erica worriedly watching her, he smiled at her in a way that told her he was taking care of her. Erica gave him a half-hearted smile back and took a few bites of the tasteless food.
Erica’s parents came into the kitchen a few minutes later, and an aunt and uncle of Michael’s, whom Erica couldn’t name, left. The room was quiet for a long time as Erica’s mother and Caroline washed a few dishes while her dad and John watched them.
Throwing a hand towel over her shoulder, Caroline turned to Erica’s mother, and said, “Rachel, would you and Erica be kind enough to help me clean Michael’s apartment next week.”
Erica stopped eating. Her dad stepped behind her and put a hand on her shoulder. Her mother froze, hands shoved into the hot water.
“Caroline, honey, we can talk about this later,” John said, stepping up beside her.
“I know, but since we have them here, I figured I would ask in person and not over the phone. I don’t care about his security deposit, but I won’t have people thinking he was a slob. Besides, I’m sure there are lots of things there that Erica would like to keep. She has more memories there than we do. It was practically her apartment too.”
“Yes, but…” John started to say.
“We would love to help you, wouldn’t we, sweetheart?” Erica’s mother said, looking to her.
Erica could only stare at Michael’s mother. She didn’t know how she felt about her question. She hadn’t thought about having to clean out his apartment. It was his apartment. His stuff should stay there.
Slowly, Erica nodded.
“Unless you would like to move in there. I’m sure the landlord could arrange something,” Caroline said.
“Caroline…” John started. “Rachel, Sam, I’m…”
“No,” Erica said a little too loudly, cutting him off since she hadn’t heard him speak. “No.” The second ‘no’ came out more softly. “I can’t. I’m sorry.”
“I understand. Believe me. We have the rest of the month to clear it out, but I think the sooner the better,” Caroline said and went back to washing dishes.
“We’ll meet you over there Wednesday, how does that sound?” Erica’s mother said.
“That’s fine.”
“Sam, I’m sorry. She’s just…” she heard John say to her father as the two men left the kitchen. She didn’t follow. She didn’t listen to her mother and Caroline discuss their plans either. She tuned everything out and slowly chewed a tiny ham and cheese sandwich.

First Chapter
“Do we really have to go to this stupid party?” Erica asked loud enough for her boyfriend, Michael, to hear on the other side of the door. She was unable to keep the whine out of her voice.
Standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom of Michael’s tiny apartment, Erica looked questioningly down at her Pirates of the Caribbean costume. She tugged on different sections of the outfit, trying to cover certain parts of her body without revealing others. Of course, Michael would have picked out the sexiest version of the costume he could find. Realizing that all of his frat brothers would be ogling her because of how much skin she was showing, she groaned. Erica was supposed to be dressed as Elizabeth Swan, and surprisingly, she thought she pulled off the look. She didn’t think she would have worn anything like the outfit if Michael, her loving, doting, and sometimes piggish boyfriend, hadn’t picked it out for her. Michael was supposed to be in the other room putting on his Captain Jack costume. “He had better be wearing the costume,” she muttered to herself. “If I leave this bathroom and he hasn’t changed, I’m going to strangle him.” The dressing up for the party had been Michael’s idea not hers. She had suggested they stay home and veg that Halloween, but her words had fallen on deaf ears. Despite her annoyance with the costume, she had to admit, she looked good even if she felt like a fool. The costumes had cost a pretty penny to rent, and she had protested getting them; even more so when he told her he wanted the two of them to wear them to the frat party where they would definitely get stained or ripped or something worse. They would end up having to pay even more money for them, which was a whole other reason she didn’t want to wear the thing. “My house is throwing the party, I have to go,” Michael said from the other room. His tone showed his annoyance at having to have the conversation again. He loved her, she knew he did, and she could tell she was hurting him by not wanting to go, but she didn’t think she could wear the outfit in public. “But you don’t live with them,” she said, not at all helping her case. “I bet they won’t even notice we aren’t there.” On that Halloween, Michael was a senior at the local university and majoring in business. His parents owned a small chain of pizza and sub shops spanning the northwest corner of the state. He had split his senior year, taking only half the classes he would have normally taken that semester, and taking the other classes the next semester, so that he could help with his parents’ newest restaurant. Because he spent so much time there, he had gotten his own apartment close to it, so that he could walk home from the restaurant after they closed to clean up and crash or study. “All of them may not, but I promised Kevin and Travis I would be there, so I have to show. Come on, Erica, it won’t be that bad.” They both knew it would be…for her at least. She loathed such situations and gatherings, and he knew it and only asked her to attend a few a year. She loved him more than she hated them, so she went to make him happy. Kevin and Travis were his childhood best friends. Erica had grown up with the boys as well, but they were his friends not hers. They were second in line under Erica on Michael’s “most important people in his life beside his parents and younger sister” list. Erica was first, of course. She had known him as long as Kevin and Travis, but when she and Michael had started dating in the tenth grade, she surpassed them in importance. “Yes, it will, but fine, we’ll go, but can we please leave before midnight? I have to open the drive-thru window in the morning,” she begged while arranging and rearranging her outfit, and procrastinating about leaving the bathroom. The bank she worked at was a decent place to work, and she wanted to stay in their good graces. She wasn’t one of those people who knew what they wanted to do when they grew up. She’d thought about a number of different occupations, even tried a few of them, but nothing seemed right for her. When her mom saw that she was excelling in all of her math classes at the university and had a healthy understanding of computers, she called her best friend, Stacy, the bank manager at First Union, and asked if she had a position open. Stacy said she did, but it was only part time and the shifts were the ones that no one wanted. The bank was trying out some new things. One of which was staying open later on weekdays. This meant that Erica worked the four to eight shift four days a week and the eight to noon shift on Saturdays, giving her nineteen hours a week at minimum wage with a possible raise in six months and full time employment the next time a position became available. She’d been there for three months at that time, and Stacy seemed happy with her work, though no one appeared to be leaving anytime soon, to Erica’s dismay. Erica was still taking classes, but only until Stacy hired her on full time and a bigger raise went into effect. College wasn’t for her, and her parents knew it. The only reason they were continuing to pay her tuition was because they wanted her to have as much of an education as possible, and they knew she would put forth as much effort as she could into the math, English, and art classes she was taking. If she actually graduated before a full-time position became available, then so be it. Michael growled at her request to leave early, but didn’t argue—he didn’t agree either. Erica knew exactly what would happen. He would bring her home at midnight, stay with her for about a half an hour until she grew sleepy, then he would use his charms to convince her to let him go back to the party, which she would do because she thought he was that cute. Also, if she didn’t relent, he would sulk all night, and she wouldn’t get much sleep anyway. “Fine,” he eventually said when she didn’t say another word or come out of the bathroom. “Now, will you please come on?” She could hear him pacing anxiously back and forth across the short room. “I look ridiculous,” she said, looking at herself in the mirror one last time, wishing she had gone with him to the costume shop to pick out something else and wishing she had more confidence in herself to wear the costume. She looked good, or at least she thought she did, but she feared that others would make fun of her. She was too old to be that self-conscious, but years spent as a chubby child with braces and glasses had made her unsure of herself, despite all the love and attention Michael showered over her. “I’m sure you don’t. That’s the hottest costume I saw at the rental place, and you’re the hottest woman I know, both of those things mean you’ll be the hottest woman at the party.” His voice was so clear that she knew he was outside the door. “Kiss ass,” she said, exiting the bathroom with a happy grin on her face. He knew just what to say to make her smile. He whistled loudly and came off the edge of the bed where he had plopped when he heard the doorknob turn. “Now, that’s what I’m talking about.” He took a step toward her, then looked down at his watch and swore. “We aren’t going to be that late,” she said, annoyed at his impatience. It was only six-thirty and the party didn’t officially start until seven, but most people wouldn’t be there until at least eight or nine. Only Michael and his friends would be there on time, and that was just to get to the food before everyone else got there. Michael’s parents always sent over a bunch of food for the boys before these big parties. They knew the guys would drink, so they hoped filling them with food would keep them from getting too drunk. There were always snacks at the party, as well, but they tried to be there for the real stuff. “It isn’t that,” he said, stepping up to her and wrapping her in his arms. “Seeing you that way has made me all tingly in my nether region. I really want to have my way with you before we go.” “Oh no, you are so not getting me out of this getup until the end of the night. “Are you really that eager to get back home?” she said teasingly, turning at the door to look at him. “You’ve been waiting for this party all week. It’s all you’ve been talking about.” “Shut up. I know I have, but I want you more than I want to be with my friends,” he said, reaching out to grab her behind. She jerked out of his way and flung open the front door. Erica made a mental note to herself to purchase the costume and wear it whenever he wanted to go somewhere she didn’t want to go. She wondered if it would be a good enough distraction to get her out of having to sit through hours and hours of watching football on television. “You need help,” she said, laughing and walking out into the hall. He flung the lock on the door and chased her down the hall, out of the building, and down the street. She laughed as they passed a young woman pushing a stroller. The woman turned to watch them as Michael caught up with Erica, grabbed her from behind, lifted her into the air, and started tickling her. The woman’s two-year-old daughter giggled and pointed at them. The momentum of Erica trying to get away from him while laughing spun them on the spot, and Erica saw the wistful look on the mother’s face.
