"Shannon," her radio crackled static, snapping her out of a restless sleep. It was Wade on his private channel.
"Go ahead," she answered groggily. Her watch read 9:30 pm and she was supposed to go on duty at 2:00 am. An hour - she'd been asleep an hour.
"Gear up. I'll be there in five minutes to get you."
"What's going on?" she wondered, rubbing her eyes.
"Don't ask, just do."
He didn't sound like they might be playing wargames. Shan moved.
Her mother was in the kitchen. Deirdre Allen was five foot three, with pale blond hair, hazel eyes, and was one of The Vista's actual doctors. She'd been twenty-nine when civilization ended. "The hospital just called me in," she announced. "Are you on-call?"
"I am now. Wade didn't tell me why."
"War games?"
"No," Shan told her. "Not this time. I know you don't like carrying, but I think this is serious. Take a sidearm, Mom, please."
Deirdre nodded. "For your peace of mind I will." She knew how to use it; she'd been forced to in the past and hoped she never would again. "Whatever it is, be careful."
"I am, and Wade wouldn't let me get away with anything else."
She hugged her. "I mean it."
"I'll see you in the morning," Shan said, hearing a car. "That's Wade. If he tells me it's practice, I'll let you know." She didn't think it was likely, but he'd fooled her before.
The moment she dropped into the passenger seat, she knew it was real. "Can you tell me now?" She'd dressed in winter camos with body armor, both Sigs and a boot gun, clips in all her pockets, plus an array of knives. Her pack held spare ammo, food rations and various bits of survival equipment.
He glanced sideways at her, heading towards Station Two with a purpose. "We lost a Scout at Wisdom about an hour ago."
"Lost?" she repeated, not expecting it.

ATTENTION
I'm going radio silent until the new year. (This date may change.) As most of you already know, I'm my in-laws' primary caregiver. We are pretty sure that my FIL is actively dying. He's hallucinating a great deal, so he needs my full attention. He's not eating or drinking. Sometimes he stops breathing altogether. At this point, I don't have the time or the energy to participate in all of the author/book groups I'm involved with or my own pages, let alone write. I'm going to take the next month or so off and simply be with my family. I will do my best to uphold any contractual obligations I have, i.e., giveaways, events, newsletter swaps, and so on, but I might be late with some, and my promotion of all will most likely be sporadic. Wow, I can't believe I'm posting two weeks in a row. Considering how crazy things have been the last few days, I'm happy to just be on my laptop.
FIL is still hanging on. He went a few days there where he didn't eat anything but a protein shake, one day he couldn't suck on a straw. I had to give him water via a medicine dropper. He isn't much better than that now, but he actually had a few bites of oatmeal, a cookie, and a few chips yesterday. Each day is different. Widely different. He'll come off the IV antibiotics on the 20th, and we'll know then how much of this is the antibiotics and how much of it is a drastic decline with his dementia.
On to my writing. I think I've found an editor if mine does decide that she needs to step away to care for her mother. Yay!!!
I'm steadily working on all of my projects, but haven't been able to give any specific one a great deal of attention. I did write another chapter of Fated, book 2 in my Valeterra series, and I sent Marked, book 1, to my new narrator. That book should be out on audio March of 2019.
Everything else I've just tinkered with when time allows.
Some of you have asked about a paperback copy of Captive. I'm working on getting it uploaded. I'm having a few issues getting the formatting right. I'll think it is okay, but KDP will give me messages about gutter errors and stuff. I think I have it all worked out, so maybe sometime real soon you can order copies of that novel in paperback.
Gotta love how needy my kitty is. LOL!! He doesn't like it when I at my computer and not playing with him

My life has been busy these last few weeks. My FIL's hallucinations are getting worse. At first, he recognized that he was hallucinating, but as of the last few days, most of the time he doesn't, which has made him ill. He's sleeping all the time, not eating or drinking much. His nurse says that he isn't actively dying, but that's coming.
Oh, and to top things off, our hot water heater went our, so I've been boiling water on the stove for baths, dishes, and the like. I feel like I'm living in one of my post-apocalyptic novels.
I have been writing. Not tons, obviously, but a bit. I talked to my editor about Shore Haven. Her mother is having some heart problems, and she said if she doesn't get to make any progress in the next week or so, she'll send me what's she done, so that I can find another editor. I hate that for her. I love her and want to keep her, but I understand the need for a lighter load. I don't want to have to find another editor, but I'm going to start reaching them next week, so if you know someone, send me their name, website, etc.
I've also started what is my last read-through of AWAKE before sending it to editing. I just can't seem to get the first chapter right, but this time around I didn't alter all that much, so maybe at the end, I won't feel the need to go over the novel again.
The nonfiction piece related to my caregiving experiences is coming along nicely. I think I'll be finished with the first draft by the end of the year. I've also nearly finished the outline of a second piece.
I'm still tinkering with a few other fictions projects, all post-apocalyptic, but none are far enough along to share too much about here at the moment.
Well, I guess that's it. I hope everyone had a great Halloween. I didn't dress up, but I did play with the filters on my phone, so that it looked like I did. Midnight and I watched Hocus Pocus and went to bed. LOL!!!
