#WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY: Excerpt from #Resistant, #Scifi #Romance. Coming Soon!

This is my eleventh week on this blog hop. This week’s piece comes from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. I’m now talking to another photographer about photo options for this cover. The first hasn’t gotten back to me. I know a cover for something like this is odd request, but I pretty sure it is do-able. I still don’t have a synopsis ready either. I’m waiting for the first round of edits from my editor to come back before trying to figure that out.

So on to the excerpt. In this scene, I’ve moved ahead in time just a bit to the night after Daniel and his people rescue Sahara from her kidnapper. Apparently, while dealing with my medical issue and illnesses, I skipped all of that. I don’t want to back track, but what happened was this: the group kicked a man out for attempting to rape a young girl. He returns and kidnaps Sahara out of malice, because he blames her for his getting kicked out. He also kidnapped another woman he had been secretly tormenting. Fortunately for Sahara and the woman, one of the men from the man’s original group had an idea of where he might have taken them. What I posted two posts ago and what I posted last week was the rescue scene. This scene is just a little later in that same day.

When I woke though, some two hours later, for just a second, I didn’t remember being rescued, and I panicked slightly. Daniel and Charles were there in heartbeat reassuring me. Daniel forced me to eat and followed me to the bathroom when I had to pee. I didn’t argue. I didn’t want to be alone, not even to do something as simple as pee. 

“What did you do with Sarah’s body?” I asked as I wiped and flushed the toilet.

“We carried her to the nearest incinerator. I’m sorry. I knew you would want to come, but we didn’t want to take any chances of her reviving or her smell luring any other zombies. This area seems devoid of them, and we want to keep it that way for the time being,” Daniel answered, wrapping his arms around me.

“I understand.” I buried my face in his neck but didn’t cry. I hoped I was done crying. “When can we leave this place?”

“We can go whenever you want,” Daniel said.

I looked out the window to see that night had fallen, then I looked around at the people who have congregated in the living room since I woke. Everyone looked tired. “We’ll wait until morning,” I said.

“You sure?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t mind driving,” Charles added.

“No, everyone is tired. I’m tired. I don’t want to sleep here one more night, but as long as I don’t have to go back up those stairs, I can tough it out, but in the morning I want out of here. Besides, the hordes migrate at night. I don’t want any of us out in that.”

“All right. If you are sure,” Daniel said.

“I’m sure.”

After that, people began boarding up doors and windows on the main floor, moving furniture around, making pallets on the living room floor, and cooking supper. All the while Daniel continued to stay by my side. I sort of wished he wouldn’t. I didn’t want to get used to him always being there in that way when I knew as soon as things got back to normal he wouldn’t be…or well, he wouldn’t be this close. We’ve sort of always be by each other’s side, but not like that, not with me tucked under his arm or in his lap, not with him constantly touching me, holding my hand, kissing my forehead.

Once we had eaten and settled for the night, Daniel pulled me to a pile of blankets and pillows tucked into the back corner of the living room. I had pulled my weapons off when we first entered the living room, and Daniel had piled his and mine by the pallet. I kicked of my shoes and crawled under the blankets. Sleeping with my clothes on was uncomfortable, but I couldn’t bring myself to shed one thing, not in this house, not with so many people so close, not when our protection level was so low. I wasn’t surprised when Daniel crawled in beside me, also fully clothed. I was surprised when he wrapped me in his arms, but I curled into him willingly.

As the sounds of people falling asleep filled the air, I heard Daniel whisper my name. I tilted me head up to look at him in answer, and he bent his head and kissed me sweetly. I melted into him, wishing that I could end every night this way. He pulled away too soon, tucked my head back under his chin, and whispered, “Goodnight.”

#WIP IT UP #WEDNESDAY - Excerpt from #Resistant, a SciFi Romance

Welcome back to WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY. I’m sorry I missed the last few weeks, but I had to deal with a personal medical issue, got food poisoning, then got the flu. Needless to say February wasn’t a fun month. But I’m back, now with more from Resistant. I’m also currently working on a ghost story/love story. There isn’t any sex in the novel, but there are some steamy/sexy/sensual stuff that I would like to share along the way, if that is all right? Let me know, if that sounds like something that fits into the blog hop, I’ll start posting sections next week. If not, I’ll keep on with Resistant, then share from Susceptible and Outcast when I start working on them again.

First, to answer your question, Mel, I think the dishes. You can sell Yellow. Yellow wasn’t that bad, but I Yellow might like being duct taped to the wall. ;)

This is my tenth week on this blog hop. This week’s piece comes from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. I’m talking to a photographer right now about photo options for this cover, so stay tuned for that and for the synopsis. I hate writing synopses, so I’ll probably wait until the last moment to write one for this novel, as usual, but it will come.

So on to the excerpt. This scene is a continuation from the last one I posted where Sahara and Daniel kissed for the first time. This is also the scene where Daniel sees her naked for the first time. Too bad it isn’t under different circumstances.

Again, he pulled away. “We have to stop,” he said.

I nodded. If we didn’t we would sleep together and this place and this situation was not where I wanted our first time to be. He didn’t know I hadn’t been raped, and if we went any further, I feared he would think that I was some kind of freak so willing to bed him after such an ordeal, and he would never forgive himself if he thought he had taken advantage of my vulnerability.

Easily he pulled me from the bed to stand. My right leg was weak from lack of use. When I could stand on my own, I let the sheet drop and pulled the pile of clothes toward me. I expected him to look away, but when he didn’t, I stopped what I was doing to watch him examine me. I flushed slightly at his gaze, until I realized that he wasn’t ogling me like a man in need would. He was actually studying me, looking for marks, bruises, signs of abuse, cursing and scowling at the number of them. He took his time examining my private areas, even stepping close, bending down, and lifting my legs to see the insides of my thighs, which was one of the few areas not bruised.

Once I decided he had seen all that he would, I stepped away, grabbed the clothes, and began to dress.

“Sahara,” he whispered as I was zipping up my jeans.

“Yeah,” I said, stopping to look at him.

“Did he hurt you? I mean did he…” Before I could answer, he continued. “He is dead. The zombie we let in got him. You don’t have to worry.”

“He didn’t,” I said and put on the bra.

“Did he do anything?”

“Not really. He tried, but I peed on him.”

“You did what?”

“I peed on him. He apparently had some kind of phobia about such things, so every time he went to touch me down there, I peed on him.”

Just as I was tucking my shirt into my pants, he pulled me to him and kissed me again. “You are fucking amazing,” he said when he finally released my lips but didn’t pull away. He still held me to him; our bodies pressed tightly together, our foreheads touching. I closed my eyes and let my body feel every inch of him. I wanted to memorize the feel of him. When this day was over; when the adrenaline rush of it all had settled, this would be over. We were caught up in the fear and exhilaration of the entire event. He wasn’t kissing me because he loved or wanted me. He was kissing me out of relief that I was alive. That had to be it because until this, he had never done such a thing. I didn’t care though. I would take what I could get, when I could get it.

“I’m not that amazing, he beat the shit out of me for it,” I said, touching my lip.

“I’d kill him for you if he weren’t already dead. I’ve never met anyone like you,” he said, brushing light kisses across my bruised face.

 Amy: What, you want specifics?

 Dr. Murphy: To an extent, yes, but let’s start small. Can you remember the first time your uncle touched you inappropriately?

February has been the month from HELL!!! Nearly everyone in my house is still sick, even our cat ran a fever. I think I actually finished this first one last week. My memory is a bit hazy.

What I've Read this Week 2-20-15

I'm still sick. Sunday started what I thought was food poisoning, but my have just been a violent stomach virus or the flu. As of right now, Wednesday 2-18-15, My husband and I have coughs, body aches, and he has been running a fever. Today’s excerpt comes from chapter one of my upcoming suspense/thriller, HIM. In this scene, Amy and her mother are having one of many discussions about the man Amy has repeatedly told her mother is molesting her. As you can see, Amy’s mother doesn’t believe anything is happening. (I played around with the punctuation and altered the scene a bit to fit the WWW guidelines.)

“Don’t start this again,” Mom warned me, “you leave your uncle alone.”

Oh, I planned to stay as far away from that man as humanly possible. The problem was that her brother, my molester, never left me alone. That man seemed determined to find me wherever I hid.

“You said he wasn’t going to be here,” I snapped, realizing, not for the first time, that this might be a trap.

“And he isn’t going to be, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make trouble by spreading your lies. Your uncle has had a lot on his plate lately with Mathew robbing that bank last year and going to jail and all. Poor man, so, don’t you go making any more trouble for him.”

Unfortunately, that night, Devan was slacking in his duties. He was apparently too caught up in the moment to bother caring about what anyone else was doing. So when she came into the bar looking the way she did, I pounced without a single thought about the consequences. If I had been in control of myself, I would have been able to smell the magic on her, the way I had smelled it last night. No matter how powerful she is, she can never hide her smell, not from us.

She is beautiful, there is no doubt, and even sober I might have pursued her for a little while. She is tall, Amazonian tall, with long, blood-red, curly hair. Her body is lean and curvy, exactly the thing that makes my loins ache. I really hate the women of this generation. They are either skeleton thin or morbidly obese. There seems to be no middle ground anymore. Whoever said that a woman was only beautiful if her bones poked through her skin was insane.

With no one to stop me, I bedded her with promises that she would not be a one-night stand, that I would call her the next morning, that I would do a lot of things that even then I knew I would never do. The sex had been great—what I could remember of it, anyway.

Yet, I barely paid any attention to her the next morning when my brother snuck into my room to wake me. Once I paid my bill at the front desk and was on my way back home, she became no more than a fleeting memory.

Apparently, I had made an impression on her. Last night she had shown up at my doorstep—pissed. How she had known where I lived, is beyond me. I had only moved into the cabin that week. The cabin had been one of the many homes we had inherited when we had bought back the rest of our land. The family that had previously owned the land had built the small log cabin as a vacation home.

My name isn’t even on the deed to the house, my older brother, Darius’, name is. I know I hadn’t given her his name. She had to have used magic to find me. If she did, her powers are greater than mine are. I can find my family and pack mates because of our blood and our bond, but some random woman I had slept with once was lost to me. I can’t even transport myself to a place I’m unfamiliar with, unless someone I am blood or bonded to is there or has been there, and even then, I have to be careful of how and where I land.

“Answer the door you worthless piece of shit,” she had screamed as she pounded on my door.

“Can I help you?” I asked, opening the door and not immediately recognizing her. After all, it had been nearly a month since the buyout.

“What do you mean, can you help me, you son of a bitch,” she screamed at me, her face turning as red as her hair.

“Look lady… I don’t… Oh shit.” The second she stepped to the doorframe, I recognized her.

“You’re damn right, ‘oh shit.’ What the fuck is wrong with you?” She was nearly nose-to-nose with me.

“Please, come in, Mave.” I said her name as a question while opening the door wider and stepping aside to get out of her line of sight and give her full access to my home, thinking that would at least help to calm her down. The look she gave me burned my soul. Literally. I felt my insides flame for a second, right before she walked passed me, and I inhaled her magical aroma. Strawberries and fire. I knew instantly I had really messed up. That smell was the sign of a very powerful witch.

“So,” she said, walking to the middle of the room and turning to face me.

“So what?” I knew I had messed up by sleeping with a witch. Most of them hated our kind. Surely, she had known what I was. I’m positive she hadn’t been drunk or even drinking. Was she going to accuse me of raping her or slipping her some sort of drug or magical concoction that compelled her to sleep with me?

“Well, you’re obviously not dead, which had been my first thought when I didn’t hear from you by the third day.”

“Excuse me?”

“You promised to call. I waited. Some of my friends said that it was customary to wait three days after getting a number to call. I figured since we had slept together you might forgo that rule, but then, when you didn’t call, I waited the three days. When I didn’t hear from you, I got worried. My friends told me to blow you off. They said you were just some asshole who had used me. I couldn’t believe it. You had promised. I went to the bar where we met and the hotel we stayed at that night. They both said you and your brothers were from out of town. That was when I began to fear your death. I searched and searched the internet for automobile accidents and plane crashes…”

That was the moment that I knew she was crazy. I should have known that night because of the things she did and was willing to do in bed. My uncle used to say that the crazy ones were always freaky in bed. I listened to her rant for a few more minutes before I cut her off.

“Look, I am real sorry about that night. My brothers and I were celebrating. Hard. I had a little too much to drink. If I said anything inappropriate, I am sorry. And I probably would have called had I had your number…” I started to lie.

“But you did have my number. I programmed it into your phone.”

“You…what…” I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and scrolled through the numbers. “It’s not in here.”

“What.” She snatched the phone from me and scrolled through the names. “You erased it.”

“No, I didn’t.” My brother must have when he realized what I had done, the bastard. I wasn’t about to tell the crazy woman in front of me this. What if I had gotten her pregnant? Thinking that caused me to blurt out, “Are you pregnant?” My heart raced at the thought of her carrying my child. On one hand, it was a great thing to bring a new member into the pack. On the other hand, for this woman to be its mother was going to cause some serious turmoil.

“No,” she said with a hint of sadness in her voice.

I fell into the seat next to me with obvious relief.

“Asshole,” she spat at my action.

“Look, I’m sorry. It’s just that…”

“Shut up. I don’t care. You had no intentions toward me whatsoever, did you?”

“Honestly, no.”

“Then why do it?”

“Why sleep with you?”

She nods.

I wanted to tell her because she was easy, but that wouldn’t be very modern of me. She was no easier than I was. We had both bedded people we didn’t know. Whereas I had intended mine to be a one-night stand, she obviously had not.

“I was drunk and you were there.” Damn it, I hadn’t meant to say that either.

“You know what, fuck you.”

And that had been the moment I became a cat. One minute I was sitting sprawled out on a chair in obvious relief of not fathering a child with this loopy fucking cunt, the next I was an itty-bitty ball of fur in the middle of the chair cushion.

What I've Read this Week 2-13-15

I'm a little sick this week, so I haven't read much, but I hope you guys enjoy this week's list. 

I finished this book Wednesday morning: I'm just not a fan of this series. I could keep all the characters and story lines straight in my head.

I read this book this morning. I enjoyed it. It was fun read, a bit cliche and predictable, but for a short,s teamy read, this is a good book. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22934093-twice-the-growl

I really needed this story after the week I've had. You can always count on Dan to make the simplest things hilarious. I'm not your typical female. I hate to shop; therefore, I felt Dan's pain in having to go into a place like BuyMart. You may plan to go in for one thing, but you always come out with more.

I loved seeing how Dan maneuvered his child through the store, getting things she needed, and testing the waters on things she might need or want for her upcoming birthday.

I also think the pl I really needed this story after the week I've had. You can always count on Dan to make the simplest things hilarious. I'm not your typical female. I also think the play between him and his wife is hilarious. Dan does a great job of showing how normal he and his family are. You see the love in the family, but you know their lives aren't perfect, and they make mistakes. When my god-daughter was growing up, we didn't have the mesh barriers for trampolines. I was always terrified that she bounce herself right off the thing, as they experienced.

As always, these stories are a must read for anyone who needs to bring a smile into their day, as I did today, and anyone who just needs to feel normal in a society where the media constantly makes most of us feel abnormal if our lives aren't perfect or isn't full of drama.
