#WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY - 4-22-15 - Exceprt from Resistant

This is my sixteenth week on this blog hop. I’m continuing this week with an excerpt from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. In this scene, I’ve moved up to the middle of the next chapter. Important things have happened, but I figured you guys would want more of the good stuff, and I’m on the verge of giving it to you. ;)
---
I woke with the worst leg cramps I’ve ever felt. I tried stretching them out. Tried messaging them out. Tired getting up, but I couldn’t stand. Nothing was working. My efforts and my cries woke Daniel.
“What’s wrong? Are you all right?” he asked, jerking up in bed.
“My legs,” I cried.
He pulled the blankets off us and went immediately to my legs. My calves were knotted and my feet pointed straight out. I sobbed and panicked. He took both of my feet and pushed them so that my toes pointed up. This stretched my calf muscles and forced them to loosen. I fell back onto the bed, breathing hard but relieved. Charley horses, as my dad had called them, always scared me. The pain was horrendous, and my legs always felt as if they would never straighten out.
Daniel spent a few minutes messaging my legs, to my utter relief, before he moved off the mattress. He went to his mini-fridge and pulled out a bottle of water.
“Drink this. You are dehydrated,” he said, handing me the bottle.
I had figured that much. I drank while he returned to messaging me. The muscles were sore, but his touch was soothing. He rubbed my feet then spread my legs slightly so that he could move between them and rub each of my calves with each hand. I finished the bottle while he worked. Gradually he moved up to behind my knees, to the backs and tops of my thighs, then to the insides of my thighs. Slowly with just small bit of pressure, he moved his hands higher up the insides of my legs.
At first I my brain didn’t register what he was doing, how wide my legs were apart, or where he was positioned between them. When I felt him on the insides of my legs, I had to forcibly keep my eyes shut. I feared that if I opened them he would stop or I found out that I was only dreaming everything.
My breathing grew raspy, stuttery, and I grew nervous with anticipation of how high he would go. He opened my legs wider and his hands moved so very close to the center of my body that my heart stopped beating. His thumbs moved over the flesh where my legs joined my body, and I gasped. He didn’t stop, but his movements grew timid, softer. With that move he had discovered that my shorts are baggy and that I was not wearing panties and his fingertips felt the tiny hairs that covered me since shaving hadn’t been a priority in a very long time.
When his thumbs came oh so close to me again, I said his name. At that, he moved his hands up to grip my hips. I could feel the tremble in them. He leaned over me to get a better a look at my face.
“Sahara?” he asked. I don’t know exactly what he is asking, but I answered the question I hoped he was asking with a yes.
To my annoyance, he didn’t delve right into me as I hoped he would. Instead, he settled back down and continued to message my thighs. Worried that I had misinterpreted his question, I forced myself to calm. Each time his movements brought him to my center, he got a little closer to actually touching me. I needed him to touch me. I let my hips jerk toward his touch, letting him know what it is that I wanted. He didn’t acknowledge the movement. At least not right away.

Today’s excerpt comes from chapter six of my suspense/thriller, HIM.
I’d never in my life raised a hand to my mother or inflicted any kind of physical pain on her, and believe me I’ve wanted to on more than one occasion, but I did that day; the second day of our last vacation on Little Paw. When I saw that man walk into the main hall, I reached over, slammed my hand onto my mother’s upper arm, grabbing hold tightly, digging my nails in so hard I nearly brought blood. I was so angry, so hurt that my vision went a little blurry. I knew I was causing her pain, but my anger at her kept me from caring.
“Ouch. Damn it, Amy, that hurts,” she cried, trying to jerk her arm from my grasp. My grip just tightened.
“Tell me you didn’t know,” I demanded.
Thank you for stopping by.

What I've Read This Week 4-17-15
I read Darkest Flame over the weekend. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18169912-darkest-flame?from_search=true
I read Fire Rising Monday. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18404115-fire-rising

Goin’ Postal is an interesting collection of creative-nonfiction short stories about the author’s life working for the United States Postal Service. The stories are hilarious, serious, scary, heartbreaking, and do a great job of depicting what life is like working anywhere with a tight knit group of people. I’ve only worked in four places in my life, and all of those places felt like this. We had our in-house squabbles, our deaths, our births, our disasters, our nights away from the job, and everything in-between. We both loved and hated each other, as most families do.
This collection does a great job at giving its reader a look into the day-to-day life inside the post office and an even greater look how human and flawed management and upper-management are even when they won’t admit it. For anyone who has worked a job where your boss has come to you with the most ludicrous request and all you can do is look at him or her with a “you can’t be serious” expression on your face, this collection is for you.
The Creek is another collection of creative-nonfiction novellas that is about the lives of the people who settled the land on the creek on which Ms. D’Ettore grew up. She has a beautiful imagination, and carves out a wonderful of tale of love, murder, betrayal, heartache, death, and determination that surround a number of families that lived on the land over time. Her female characters are always strong and self-sufficient, which always draws me to her work. Her take on the lives of these families, from a young woman and her father who farmed the land, to a widowed mother of five who lost everything and had to move to the creek to raise her children alone, to the soldier’s family who suffered much in their grief over his loss, are realistic and not glorified. We are a people ruled by our hearts and our emotions, and her characters always depict this, making them relatable and true.

Just a little apology for missing last week. I had a busy week at work, and I just didn’t get time to get this ready for you guys. Sorry.
This is my fifteenth week on this blog hop. I’m continuing this week with an excerpt from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. This scene is short and ends the chapter in which my last few posts took place.
---
After we ate, I helped clean up, then lay down in my new spot to read a book while he went over the next day’s schedule. I’d been gradually reading through all of Jonathan Maberry’s zombie novels. I was currently on book two of his young adult Benny Imura series. A time or two Daniel tried to start a conversation, but his starters and my answers never led to a real conversation.
I only managed to read one chapter, before giving up and turning away from him to get comfortable.
“Sahara?” he whispered, crawling into the bed with me. He didn’t get close enough to touch me, but I could feel heat radiating off his body. I wanted desperately to cuddle up next to him, but I didn’t.
“Yeah,” I answered.
“Was I wrong to do this?”
I wanted to say yes. I wanted to scream in frustration. Instead, I rolled to face him and said, “No.” Because it was true. He might not have done this for the reason I wanted him to, but he had done it, and I actually like sleeping next to him.
“Then, are you mad at me for something else?”
“No. I’m just tired and on edge. People have been treating me weird all day. Like I’m about to break. Or like I’m a rabid dog that has bitten their child.”
He reached up, stroked the side of my face, and said he was sorry.
“It’s not your fault. I’m a big girl. In a week or so, it will all blow over. I hope.”
He didn’t say anything to this. He did lean over, kiss my forehead, and whisper, “Goodnight.”
“Night,” I said back then yawned.
I was asleep in minutes.
The next morning I woke wrapped in his arms. For the first minutes after I woke, I took advantage of this and let myself feeling him surrounding me. I was sure I must have had another nightmare, though I don’t remember dreaming, but the fact that he was holding me proved it. He breathed slowly, and his breathe tickled the back of my neck. The feel of it made me warm and liquidy inside.

What I Read The Week - 4-10-15
I read Doomed over the weekend. I loved it. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13505645-doomed?from_search=true
I finished reading Dark Bites Thursday night. If you haven't read any of Kenyon's work, you should. She is an amazing author. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13508220-dark-bites?from_search=true&search_exp_group=group_a
Newborn Nazi is another wonderfully written novel by Rhoda D’Ettore. The novel is about a German family who suffers much during Hitler’s rule. There are many stories out there both true and fictional about the lives of the Jewish people during that time, and those stories, more than any other, should be told, but I think seeing the world from a German point of view is also helpful because we don’t live in a black and white world were everything we are told or even see is true. The only other novel I’ve read like this is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
In Newborn Nazi, we see the German world through Hedwig, a young German woman, and her brothers: one who is forced into a Nazi Youth camp and all but brainwashed into believing Hitler’s propaganda, one who is blackmailed into complying with a corrupt government , and a third who refuses to acknowledge what is happening in his home world, as he escaped to America before Hitler cemented his control. We see how easily people are coerced into lying to their family, spying on their family and friends, committing murder, and even turning on their country when those they love are threated. We see how this coercion, these lies and secrets can crumble lives and bring an entire race of people to their knees.
As with all of D’Ettore’s novels, this one is full of twists and turns you never see coming. It is full of laughs, tears, love, and war. And most of all it has a strong female lead that teaches the reader that not everyone in Germany fell for Hitler’s lies, not everyone woman submits to the men in their lives who see them as nothing more than property, and more importantly, she shows how one person can truly make a positive difference in so many people’s lives. If it weren’t for her and people like her, her world could have been so much worse, which is hard to imagine since things were so horrific. She gives us courage, strength, and the desire to stand up for what we believe in and take care of one another. She says it all in one simple phrase, “All life is precious.” Hedwig losses everything in this novel, but she gains herself. She may not have gotten the life I wanted for her, but she lived a life worth living.
I can’t wait to get my hands on more of this author’s work.
--Author Jennifer Reynolds.

---
“Hungry,” he asked, watching my entree with intensity. He noticed my slight limp and yawn. My right leg and ankle ached were Marcus had cuffed me, but the more I moved around the loser and better it would feel.
“Yes, but you don’t have to cook for me.” That was the most absurd thing I have ever said to him, considering we’ve been sharing meals since the day we meet, and he has cooked nearly every one of them. He gave me an odd look before turning back to stir the noodles.
I stepped around the wall of blankets separating his area from mine to see that my pallet was missing. I looked around the room and noticed my area was much smaller than it used to be. There had been so much in his area that I hadn’t noticed that it was bigger than it had been. What the hell? Was this his not so subtle way of telling me he wanted me out? If so, why were my clothes and things still where I had left them?
“Where is my bed?” I asked with more fear than anger in my voice as I stepped back to Daniel’s area. I scanned his section, looking for my things and noticing the slight differences. There was more room than there had been. The bed had more pillows and blankets, and he had created a small seating area.
Before he could answer and say things that would break my heart, I moved back to my area, forcing the fear down and calling up the anger. “All you’ve given me is enough room store my clothing and gear. I can barely change clothes in here. What is going on?”
“Don’t be mad…” he started.
Anger and fear that he was trying to force me to find another sleeping area overwhelmed me, and I started to panic. I shoved the wall of curtains down to the back wall, opening the area wide and making it one large area.
“Where is my bed?” I tried to shout, but the question came out as a plea.
“Your bed is right there.” He pointed down at his bed. His voice suggested that this fact should be obvious. “I left the curtains up to give you privacy when you needed it.”
“Excuse me. That is your bed.” The fear evaporated, hope rose, but I masked it with confusion.
“Now it is yours. You’ve slept on that pallet long enough.”
“I know. I’ve been meaning to get my own mattress, I just…”
“You don’t need a mattress. That one is big enough for the both of us.” He wasn’t wrong, but damn it, he was never going to find himself a companion if people found out we are sleeping together.
“Daniel, I…”
“Don’t argue. Food will be done in a moment. We have Ramon’s and Beanie weenies. Not the most nutritious, but our meals never are. We need to add canned vegetables to the supply list. We never have enough vegetables. We also need to the look into planting some if we decided to stay here much longer.”
Too tired and headachy to argue or follow his train of thought, I turned to the closet—that is all the area was big enough to be now—and changed. I didn’t even bother pulling the curtains together to do so. We were going to be sharing a bed after all. Also, I wasn’t getting completely naked and my back was to him.
I pulled off my t-shirt and under shirt and threw them into the basket that held my dirty clothes, making a mental note to wash my clothes the next day. Normally, to conserve clothing, time, water, cleaning supplies, I would have worn the shirt to bed even after wearing it all day, but I had gotten a bit sweaty, and I wasn’t about to crawl into bed with him smelling like sweat.
With that thought in mind, I changed out sports bras and heard something metal hit something else metal. “You all right,” I asked, slipping on a new one.
“Yeah,” he said in a hoarse voice.
I reapplied my deodorant, noticed that I needed to shave again, then prayed he hadn’t seen my armpits. At this point, I was quickly wishing I had pulled the curtain closed. I pulled another t-shirt on and turned to face him.
He was looking hard down at the bowls into which he had poured the noodles. He seemed to be holding his breath and concentrating hard on what he was doing. His posture made me wonder if he looked that way because my disrobing affected him or if he was annoyed that I would do such a thing in front of him. I was sure it was the latter, and didn’t care. It is what he gets for being so high handed.
Gleeful at his annoyance, I took a bowl of noodles from him and sat down cross-legged on his bed…on the side nearest my closet. The side that I was claiming for myself, despite the fact that I’ve seen him sleeping on that side every time I’ve gotten up before him or gotten back after him. This was his side of the bed but tough shit. He didn’t say anything just sat down opposite me. We ate in silence.
---
I hoped you enjoyed that.

Thank you, everyone, for stopping by my twenty-first Weekend Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday and my thirteenth Snippet Sunday post. If you want to read more excerpts from other authors or to join in the fun, stop by both blogs and peruse their sights.
Today’s excerpt comes from chapter four of my suspense/thriller, HIM. A note: All sections in script form between Dr. Murphy and Amy take place one year, after her abuser’s crimes are made public. Many of you have wonder if her mother ever grows to believe her. Maybe this will give you a clue. Second note: I altered this scene to fit the blog hops guidelines.
Dr. Murphy: Did you talk to your mother this week?
Amy: She tried to call, but I can’t relive any of this with her right now.
Dr. Murphy: You still don’t think she believes you.
Amy: No, I don’t. I know she has heard all of the stories, who hasn’t? I know she knows more about what has happened to me than what I’ve told her, but, no, I don’t think she believes me.
Dr. Murphy: Maybe if she owns up to it being true, she has to admit her part in it, and she can’t do that.
Amy: I don’t know.

What I've Read this Week 3-26-15
I loved this novel. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39988.Matilda?from_search=true
I love this novel. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves seeing the world and our history how it truly is/was and not as the Hollywood version we pretend it is/was.
Tower of Tears takes you on an emotional roller coaster as it explores the lives of an Irish family who has migrated to America. The novel focuses mainly on Jane, a timid, wonderful, loving woman who travels to America with her young son at the behest of her husband and to fulfill her mother’s final wish that she go to America to find a better life. Jane’s husband and brother follow nearly two years later, but unfortunately, by then, life in the new world and life without his wife have irrevocably changed the once happy couple.
This the story holds nothing back. Ms D’Ettore explores the racial and religious prejudices of the 1800s, prejudices that are still prominent today. It also explores gender roles and doesn’t hold back when it comes to the realities of the suffering many women endured in a time when they were seen as mere property and little more. This novel is raw and real. You will laugh, you will cringe in horror, and you will cry, but you will also grow to love this family and their undying devotion to each other.
I can’t wait to read more of Ms D’Ettore’s work and the next books in this series.
I finished listening to Revival this morning. I loved it. :) :) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20926278-revival?from_search=true
I finished reading Breed of Innocence last night. This is a great read, but it does have a more than a few typos, mostly missing words. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15735201-breed-of-innocence?ac=1
I read Don't Drink and Hex last night. This is a very short, funny, sexy, read. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23348622-don-t-drink-and-hex?from_search=true
#WIP IT UP WEDNESDAY Excerpt from Resistant

Also on that page, you will find links to other wonderful authors and their WIP.
This is my thirteenth week on this blog hop. This week’s piece comes from my current romance WIP, Resistant. Resistant is a romance set in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.
So on to the excerpt. In this scene, I’ve moved ahead in time a bit again. Here we see that others, even Sahara’s best friend, have noticed the change in Sahara and Daniel’s relationship. I put Daniel and Sahara's name in parentheses to help you discern who is speaking in the beginning of the scene.
---
“That wasn’t what I meant.” (Daniel)
“What did you mean?”(Sahara)
“I meant that I didn’t want you going without…” He didn’t get to finish his sentence because at that moment the gates began to slide open. I took off back to the front entrance to meet them at the door. Daniel followed on my heels. The last of the vehicles were pulling into their respective spots when we reached them. Charles got out, rushed to me, and scooped me up in a bear hug.
“How are doing?” he asked, setting me back on my feet.
“I’ve been better,” I said.
He turned my face, examining my fading bruises, then turned to Daniel, his eyes repeating the question.
“She is doing better. Having nightmares,” he said around clinched teeth. At first I thought his tone was because of what happened, but when I turned to look at him, I saw that his eyes were locked on Charles’ arm, which was still around my shoulder. He looked angry and a bit jealous of the way Charles was holding me. Even though I knew Daniel didn’t want me, I didn’t want him thinking that I was interested in Charles that way; therefore, I pulled away from Charles as innocently as I could and asked how Stacey was doing. Charles didn’t seem to notice.
“Physically better. Mentally not so much. I know it has only been a few days, but I honestly don’t know if she is going to recover from this. And I’d advise you to stay away from her. She blames you. I think she knows that what happened to her isn’t your fault, but she needs someone to blame, to be mad at, and since Marcus is dead, you are the easiest target.”
“What about everyone else? Do they blame me as well?”
“Oh, no sweetie. We’ve told everyone who was with us the story, and they will talk to those who are here, which I’m sure you’ve already done.” He directed that last statement to Daniel.
Daniel nodded. “I have.”
“They should back up your story then.”
“And even if they don’t, I won’t let anyone say or do anything to you,” Daniel said, putting his arm around me and pulling me toward him. I couldn’t help it, I leaned into him and let him hold me for a second.
“Well, I have reports to make. I’ll catch up with you two later,” Charles said, getting Daniel’s subtle hint to leave us.
“When you’re ready, we need to make a run. Supplies are low,” I said.
He looked from me to Daniel and back again. I saw a range of emotions and thoughts pass over his face before he nodded. “If you are up to it.”
“I am.”
“Daniel?” Charles asked.
The fact that he thought he had to ask Daniel both warmed my heart and pissed me off. I both wanted people to think we were together because I wanted him, but I also wanted them to know we weren’t together so he wouldn’t feel obligated to take care of me. Also, the independent woman side of me scowled at their audacity. I could take care of myself, and I could make my own decisions.
Before I could say anything though, Daniel nodded and said, “I think she will be all right if you go with her.”
I just walked off, muttering the word, “Assholes,” under by breath as I went back into the building.

I hoped you enjoyed that.
Don’t forget that HIM, my suspense/thriller, is now on sale. The novel has already received some amazing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Most of the reviews forewarn people that this novel is graphic and is not for those who love beautiful Hollywood endings. So far, all have given it four and five stars, despite the content because of how moving and powerful the story is.

#8Sunda & #SnippetSunday #Excerpt from #HIM, a #suspense/#thriller.
Thank you, everyone, for stopping by my twentieth Weekend Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday and my twelfth Snippet Sunday post. If you want to read more excerpts from other authors or to join in the fun, stop by both blogs and peruse their sights.
Today’s excerpt comes from chapter four of my suspense/thriller, HIM.
“But Mom, everyone is going to be at Jennifer’s.”
“Obviously, not everyone. You aren’t going to be there.”
“Please, I really don’t want to be here when…” I trailed off because I hadn’t told her what had happened that Christmas at my grandparents. I had hinted around about not liking her favorite brother. I told her I thought he was creepy, and she told me I was being ridiculous.
“Don’t start it, Amy.”
