Chase dropped to
the ground on her right, landing light as a cat before straightening to his
full height and stepping close. “You’re
not so good at listening, let’s see how good you are with your mouth,” he
smirked. Closing the distance between
them, he leaned down to kiss her, giving her no opportunity to pull away.
Millie opened her
mouth to retort, her reply cut off to little more than a squeak as his mouth
closed over hers. Who the hell did he
think he was? A wolf… a little voice deep inside reminded as she tasted his
hunger. Awareness flushed through her
body as Chase pressed her against the length of him, trapping her body between
his and the tree. Everything about him was
hard and unyielding, but he didn’t punish her with his strength, he merely kept
her from escaping while he explored the dark secrets of her mouth at his
leisure. Amelia’s initial hesitation
quickly disappeared, the blood singing in her veins as her arousal spread like
wildfire wherever their bodies touched.
Still, a smidgen of
self control remained and Millie shoved at his chest, desperate to create a
little space between them. Chase barely
gave an inch, blazing a trail of kisses along the curve of her jaw toward the
smooth column of her throat.
“What are you
doing?” she demanded, even as her fingers slid up to curl around the collar of
his shirt, pulling him closer.
“Showing you how
dangerous the night can be.”
His kiss was
everything wild and dangerous about the night as promised, and a secret part of
herself she didn’t even know existed responded to the predator who took what he
wanted, instead of asking permission as society dictated. No thought for consequences or the future,
Chase operated on a purely sensual level.
She could feel it in the way the energy thrummed from his body to
hers. It made her forget the party in
full swing just a few feet away, forget her objections to being manhandled
altogether. Somewhere in the back of her
mind that bothered her in a big way, and a flare of panic went through her as
he touched bare skin.
“Wait…” she
panted, breaking the kiss and drawing in a ragged breath.
“Relax.” Chase made no move to let her go, lips
brushing over the sensitive spot where neck met shoulder.
“We should get
back to the party.”
“I warned you not
to stray into the dark woods unprotected.”
His teeth scraped lightly over her flesh in a love bite, and Millie
hoped it wouldn’t leave a mark. That was
the last thing she wanted to explain to Gran.
“You were the one
who was supposed to protect me, remember?”
“I am protecting
you,” he insisted.
“How, by mauling
me out in the woods yourself?” Millie demanded, pulling her head away to try
and catch his gaze.
“I am keeping you
safe by making you mine,” Chase replied as if it was the most obvious thing in
the world.
“Who says I’m
yours?”
That brought him
up short. “Is there someone else?”
“Well, no, but…”
“Then what’s the
problem?” His sexy grin reappeared.
“The problem is, I
just met you yesterday, Chase. I don’t
work that fast.”
“You can’t fight
your destiny, Amelie. You know we belong
together.”
“Don’t call me
that,” she snapped irritably. Chase
seemed unperturbed, stroking his fingers down the bare skin of her back, making
her shiver with delight. It took Amelia
a long moment to focus her thoughts again before she could reply. “Just because you’re a good kisser, doesn’t
make you my destiny. Besides, what about
Leah?”
“What about
her?” He stared back blankly.
“Aren’t you and
she…?”
Chase gave an
inelegant snort. “That was never
anything serious.”
“Does she know that? Because if looks could kill…”
“She knew exactly
what she was getting into.”
Millie turned that
over in her head for a moment, trying to decide exactly what he meant by
that. “Look…” She stole a deep, calming breath. “I like you Chase. I’d like to get to know you better, but I
don’t belong to anyone but myself.
That’s about all I’m offering right now.
If that’s not enough…” She shook
her head.
Chase stared back
at her for a long moment, and then the tension went out of his body and he
found his smile again. “Alright, that’ll
have to be enough for now. I’m a patient
man, Millie – up to a certain point,” he replied, tilting her chin up and
placing an almost chaste kiss to her lips.
“So, if you’re not going to let me steal your virtue out here, let’s get
back to the party. And no more wandering
off, you understand?”
“Okay, okay,” she
grumbled, trusting the darkness to hide her eye roll. “I read you loud and clear.” She accepted his hand for the walk back to
the party.
“Good, I’d hate to
have to give you another lesson.”

Thank you, everyone, for stopping by my Snippet Sunday & Writing Warriors’ #8Sunday blog hop post. Today will be my third excerpt from my upcoming novella, Saying Goodbye. Right now, I’m looking at a October 15, 2015 release date. I don’t have a synopsis for the novel yet, but in a nutshell it is a paranormal love story/love triangle about a ghost who is trying to find a way to stay on earth to be with the love of his life. In doing so, he introduces her to a man that she might start having feelings for.
I’m noticing that some are disliking Michael. I hope the more we get into the story, and we see more of their relationship, how long they’ve been together, the type of people they are, where they are at in their relationship, etc. your opinions of him will change a bit. If not, that is okay.
The following snippet follows last week’s post. Michael and Erica are still discussing the party, and she is still procrastinating.
“But you don’t live with them,” she said, not at all helping her case. “I bet they won’t even notice we aren’t there.”
On that Halloween, Michael was a senior at the local university and majoring in business. His parents owned a small chain of pizza and sub shops spanning the North West corner of the state. He had split his senior year, taking only half the classes he would have normally taken that semester, and taking the other classes the next semester, so that he could help with his parents’ newest restaurant. Because he spent so much time at the restaurant, he had gotten his own apartment close to the new restaurant, so that he could walk home from the restaurant after they closed to clean up and crash or study.
“All of them may not, but I promised Kevin and Travis I would be there, so I have to show. Come on, Erica, it won’t be that bad.” They both knew it would be…for her at least. She loathed such situations and gatherings, and he knew it and only asked her to attend a few a year. She loved him more than she hated them, so she went to make him happy.

That is, until I woke up in a bed and can’t remember who it belongs to. Come to think of it…I don’t remember much about the last week.

Kevin and Travis were his childhood best friends. Erica had grown up with the boys as well, but they were his friends not hers. They were second in line under Erica on Michael’s “most important people in his life beside his parents and younger sister” list. Erica was first, of course. She had known him as long as Kevin and Travis, but when they started dating in the tenth grade, she surpassed them in importance.
“Yes, it will, but fine, we’ll go, but can we please leave before midnight? I have to open the drive-thru window in the morning,” She begged, arranging and rearranging her outfit, and procrastinating about leaving the bathroom.
The bank she worked at was a decent place to work, and she wanted to stay in their good graces. She wasn’t one of those people who knew what they wanted to do when they grew up. She’d thought about a number of different occupations, even tried a few of them, but nothing seemed right for her. When her mom saw that she was excelling in all of her math classes at the university and had a healthy understanding of computers, she called her best friend, Stacy, the bank manager at First Union, and asked if she had a position open.
Stacy said she did, but it was only part time and the shifts were the ones that no one wanted. The bank was trying out some new things. One of which was staying open later on weekdays. This meant that Erica worked the four to eight shift four days a week and the eight to noon shift on Saturdays, giving her nineteen hours a week at minim wage with a possible raise in six months and full time employment the next time a position became available. She’d been there for three months, at that time, and Stacy seemed happy with her work, though no one appeared to be leaving anytime soon, to Erica’s dismay.
Erica was still taking classes, but only until Stacy hired her on full time and a bigger raise went into effect. College wasn’t for her, and her parents knew it. The only reason they were continuing to pay her tuition was because they wanted her to have as much of an education as possible, and they knew she would put forth as much effort as she could into the math, English, and art classes she was taking. If she actually graduated before a full-time position became available, then so be it.
Michael growled at her request to leave early, but didn’t argue—he didn’t agree either. Erica knew exactly what would happen. He would bring her home at midnight, stay with her for about a half an hour until she grew sleepy, then he would use his charms to convince her to let him go back to the party, which she would do because she thought he was that cute. Also, if she didn’t relent, he would sulk all night, and she wouldn’t get much sleep anyway.
“Fine,” he eventually said when she didn’t say another word or come out of the bathroom. “Now, will you please come on?” She could hear him pacing anxiously back and forth across the short room.

“He had better be wearing the costume,” she muttered to herself. “If I leave this bathroom and he hasn’t changed, I’m going to strangle him.” The dressing up for the party had been Michael’s idea not hers. She had suggested they stay home and veg that Halloween, but her words had fallen on deaf ears. Despite her annoyance with the costume, she had to admit, she looked good even if she felt like a fool.
The costumes had cost a pretty penny to rent, and she had protested getting them; even more so when he told her he wanted the two of them to wear them to the frat party where they would definitely get stained or ripped or something worse. They would end up having to pay even more money for them, which was a whole other reason she didn’t want to wear the thing.
“My house is throwing the party, I have to go,” Michael said from the other room. His tone showed his annoyance at having to have the conversation again. He loved her, she knew he did, and she could tell she was hurting him by not wanting to go, but she just didn’t think she could wear the outfit in public.

Today I’m switching gears and for the next few months will be sharing excerpts from my upcoming novella, Saying Goodbye. Right now, I’m looking at an October 15, 2015 release date for this novel. I don’t have a synopsis for the novel yet, but in a nutshell it is a paranormal love story/love triangle about a ghost who is trying to find a way to stay on earth to be with the love of his life. In doing so, he introduces her to a man that she might start having feelings for.
The following snippet is the first two pages or so of the novel. This snippet introduces the couple before Michael dies.
“Do we really have to go to this stupid party?” Erica asked loud enough for her boyfriend to hear on the other side of the bathroom door. She was unable to keep the whine out of her voice.
Standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom of her boyfriend’s tiny apartment, Erica looked questioningly down at her Pirates of the Caribbean costume. She tugged on different sections of the outfit, trying to cover certain parts of her body without revealing others. Of course Michael would have picked out the sexiest version of the costume he could find. Realizing that all of his frat brothers would be ogling her just because of how much skin she was showing, she groaned.
Erica was supposed to be dressed as Elizabeth Swan, and surprisingly, she thought she pulled off the look. She didn’t think she would have worn anything like the outfit if Michael, her loving, doting, and sometime piggish boyfriend, hadn’t picked it out for her. Michael was supposed to be in the other room putting on his Captain Jack costume.
